The Curious Incident of the Cat in the Night-Time

I am pretty sure that my cat is up to some late-night shenanigans, but I am not sure exactly what it involves. If I leave the door to my upstairs bathroom open at night, I sometimes awaken to find muddy paw prints leading to (or from) the toilet, tiny specks of dirt on the tile around there, and streaks of mud inside the bowl itself. This is not cat poop or anything gross – it’s just garden-variety mud. I suspect that Weegee (the cat in question) comes in after a night of gallivanting and uses the toilet like a sink to wash her dirty little paws. I also think she shakes them dry afterward, thus causing the spots on the tile. But I’m not sure; there is no smoking gun. I haven’t caught her red- or wet-handed, and I am almost tempted to set up a motion-activated webcam and get to the bottom of this mystery once and for all. I only hope it doesn’t turn out to be something truly bizarre. For all I know, local raccoons and skunks are coming in trough the kitty door and use my toilet for doing their laundry or rinsing off dead voles. Eeeek.
