Well said, Julia.

I recently received a CD of Julia Sweeny’s wonderful one-woman show Letting go of God, in which she chronicles her quest to discover what she could about God.  She originally set out on this path with the intent to reaffirm her wavering faith, but the more she searched the clearer it became to her that there is no God after all. She speaks of her experiences along the way, including time spent studying the bible through the Catholic church, dabbling in Eastern philosophies, and her almost swooning first encounter with Deepak Chopra, which took place soon after she had read a few of his publications.  Most people know Chopra from his feel-good lectures as well as his books, all of which purport that hard science, especially quantum mechanics, somehow serves to prove that his particular strain of new-age prattle is true. But unlike the majority of the people who read or listen to Chopra and swallow it all whole, Sweeney was interested and responsible enough to actually do some research into his claims and find out the facts for herself. Here is what she had to say about Chopra in her performance:

Deepak says: “The world is the creation of the observer and the body is information and energy spanning the universe. Consciousness is the ground of all being. It created us and we are part of it.”
Deepak believes that we can tap into this big consciousness with our awareness and it is the source of all creativity, and intention, and synchronicity.
And if you want proof?  Well, the exotic field of quantum mechanics proves all of it.
I was really enthralled with how Deepak was using science, the cutting edge science of quantum mechanics.  This was so much better than using myths and superstition to find spirituality.  I was so intrigued by this quantum mechanics that Deepak refers to over and over again in his books that I decided to take a class in it.
What I found out is that Deepak Chopra is full of shit.
